In a surprising turn of events, former NBA shooting guard and current ESPN analyst JJ Redick has emerged as the top candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers' vacant head coach position. While an official deal has not been reached just yet, Redick's meetings with team brass were reportedly "very impressive," according to Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic.

Charania broke the news on the Pat McAfee Show, revealing that Redick's discussions with the Lakers took place over the weekend. Despite no formal agreement between the two parties as of now, Redick remains the clear frontrunner for the coveted coaching role.

The Lakers' pursuit of Redick comes after their previous top choice, UConn head coach Dan Hurley, rejected their offer. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Hurley reportedly turned down a lucrative six-year, $70 million deal from the Lakers, leaving the team to quickly shift their focus to alternative options.

Charania had initially reported on June 4 that the Lakers had identified Redick as the frontrunner for the head coach role. League and media industry sources informed The Athletic that the Lakers were narrowing in on Redick, although a final decision had not been made at that time.

With Redick's basketball expertise and experience as a respected analyst, the Lakers see potential in him leading the team from the sidelines. Known for his sharpshooting abilities during his playing career, Redick brings a unique perspective and understanding of the game that could benefit the Lakers' roster, which is filled with talent.

While the Lakers still have further steps in their head-coaching search process, the indications are strong that Redick is currently the leading choice for the prestigious position. As fans eagerly anticipate an official announcement, it remains to be seen if Redick will indeed become the head coach of one of the league's most storied franchises.
