In a long-standing divorce battle, former Hollywood power couple Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum are set to go to trial to determine the division of earnings from the highly successful Magic Mike franchise. The exes, who filed for divorce in 2018 after nearly a decade of marriage, have called on witnesses to testify in their ongoing divorce proceedings, with the contentious issue of Magic Mike profits taking center stage.
Court filings reveal that Dewan's lawyers argue that the Magic Mike movies, which Tatum starred in and produced, as well as their subsequent spin-offs and a reality TV series, were developed during their marriage using joint resources and funds. Dewan alleges that Tatum and his associates intentionally created a complex network of companies and partnerships to undervalue and conceal the community property share of the Magic Mike intellectual property.
As a result, Dewan's legal team has requested a separate trial to accurately assess and divide the assets and earnings tied to the Magic Mike franchise. They seek to prove that Tatum colluded to shield the income generated by Magic Mike from Dewan, leaving her deprived of her rightful share.
Tatum vehemently denies these claims, stating in his filings that he has never denied Dewan her fair portion of the community assets or income. He contends that since their separation, he has continued to develop and enhance the Magic Mike intellectual property, which, in his view, gives rise to his separate property interest in the franchise.
Tatum's lawyers express frustration in their response, emphasizing that they have made extensive efforts to reach a settlement over the course of the last five years and now require a trial to move forward without any further delays. They assert that Tatum has continuously worked to improve the Magic Mike brand since the separation.
The high-profile couple met on the set of the dance film Step Up in 2006 and tied the knot on July 11, 2009. They have an 11-year-old daughter named Everly. The announcement of their breakup came in April 2018, with the divorce filing becoming official in October of the same year.
Since their separation, both Dewan and Tatum have moved on to new relationships. Tatum is now engaged to actress Zoë Kravitz, while Dewan is engaged to actor Steve Kazee. Dewan also has a four-year-old son named Callum with Kazee and is currently expecting another child.
The trial's outcome will determine how the Magic Mike assets and earnings will be divided between Dewan and Tatum, potentially setting a precedent for future divorce cases involving intellectual property rights.
