In a disappointing turn of events for the New York Yankees, outfielder Jasson Domínguez, the team's highly-touted prospect, will be out of action for approximately eight weeks due to a significant left oblique strain. The news was announced by Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Thursday.
Boone described the strain as "pretty significant," emphasizing that Domínguez's recovery timeline would span about eight weeks before he can return to game action. The 21-year-old athlete had experienced discomfort near his left oblique while executing a checked swing during a Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre game last Saturday, resulting in his placement on the injured list.
Despite the setback, Domínguez has showcased his exceptional talent throughout the season, with an impressive stat line of .356/.404/.609. He has also contributed six home runs and 13 RBIs in 23 games across various levels of play.
Known by his nickname "The Martian," Domínguez has long been viewed as a key part of the Yankees' future plans, having signed a lucrative $5.1 million bonus agreement after his arrival from the Dominican Republic in July 2019. His remarkable start in the big leagues last September, where he recorded a .333 batting average with three home runs in just five games, only added to the anticipation surrounding his potential.
Unfortunately, Domínguez's success was short-lived as he encountered difficulties with his swing shortly after his impressive debut, ultimately requiring Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The procedure, performed by Dr. Keith Meister on September 20, abruptly concluded his 2021 season.
The young outfielder made a comeback in May, gradually progressing through a series of rehabilitation assignments with Single-A Tampa and Double-A Somerset. After displaying a strong performance, Domínguez was activated from the injured list and assigned to the RailRiders, where he continued to excel with a slash line of .389/.405/.639 over nine games.
However, due to the Yankees' established outfield lineup featuring Alex Verdugo, Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton, the team faced limited opportunities to promote Domínguez to the major league level.
Now, with this latest injury, Domínguez faces another setback in his path to the big leagues. Nevertheless, the Yankees organization remains hopeful that their talented outfielder will make a full recovery and resume his promising career trajectory when he returns to the field in approximately eight weeks.
