In a surprising turn of events, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, has revealed that he is no longer on the board of Bluesky, the social media decentralization project.

The news came to light when Dorsey took to X, his philanthropic platform, to announce grants for open protocols from his Start Small initiative. In response to a user's query about his position on the Bluesky board, Dorsey simply replied with a terse "no," without providing any further explanation. Subsequent follow-up posts asking for clarification went unanswered.

The exact date of Dorsey's departure from the board remains unclear, as ascertained by Bluesky's corporate FAQ, which still identifies him as a board member as of Sunday morning. To confirm the development, inquiries have been made to the company.

It is worth noting that Dorsey first unveiled the Bluesky project back in 2019, during his tenure as Twitter's CEO. At the time, he announced that Twitter (now X) would be funding an independent team of open source architects, engineers, and designers to develop a decentralized standard for social media.

Since its inception, Bluesky has evolved into an independent public benefit corporation, led by CEO Jay Graber, with support from venture capitalists. In February, the project opened to the general public, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards decentralization.

Interestingly, Dorsey seemingly deleted his Bluesky account sometime last year, although his departure from the project was only acknowledged through sporadic social media posts. Despite his absence from the platform, Dorsey has remained the most prominent figure associated with Bluesky.

Meanwhile, Dorsey's activity on X has been quite notable. Apart from the announcement about his philanthropic grants, he has been engaged in discussions concerning the highly publicized beef between rap artists Drake and Kendrick Lamar. Furthermore, Dorsey has unfollowed nearly every other account, and emphasized the need for individuals to defend their rights using "freedom technology," instead of relying on corporations.

As more details regarding Jack Dorsey's departure from the Bluesky board emerge, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the future of the social media decentralization project, which was initially heralded as a potential game-changer in the digital landscape.
