Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Deadly Attack at Crocus City Hall near Moscow

The attack, which resulted in at least 40 deaths and more than 100 injuries, targeted a large gathering of Christians in the city of Krasnogorsk.

According to a statement posted on IS's Telegram account, their fighters launched the assault, causing widespread destruction before safely retreating to their bases. The horrific incident left the community in shock and mourning, with two children among those wounded. Russia's commissioner for children's rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, reported that the injured children were in moderate to grave condition, including one who suffered a gunshot wound and another struck with the buttstock of a rifle.

Following the attack, Russian authorities swiftly mobilized. The national guard conducted an inspection of the parking lots surrounding Crocus City Hall, but no explosives were found. Authorities continue to conduct checks in the surrounding area to ensure public safety.

The European Union (EU) expressed its shock and condemnation of the terrorist attack. Peter Stano, the EU's lead spokesperson for foreign affairs, issued a statement on social media, expressing solidarity with the Russian people affected by the tragedy. Stano emphasized the EU's firm stance against attacks on civilians.

The British embassy in Russia also condemned the attack, describing it as a "terrible tragedy." The embassy extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims. Similarly, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically rejected accusations made by Russian officials suggesting Ukraine's involvement in the attack. The ministry denounced the accusations as a planned provocation by the Kremlin to fuel anti-Ukrainian sentiments and discredit Ukraine internationally.

Meanwhile, the Russian rock band Piknik, scheduled to perform at Crocus City Hall, expressed concern over one of its members who remained out of contact. The band's managing director, Yuri Chernyshevsky, revealed that they were unable to reach the missing member, leaving uncertainty about their safety.

In a separate development, Reuters reported that IS claimed responsibility for the attack on its Telegram channel. The French foreign ministry expressed solidarity with the victims and the Russian people, calling for a thorough investigation to shed light on the heinous acts that unfolded.
