Islam Makhachev proved his dominance once again in the UFC lightweight division, successfully defending his title against a resilient Dustin Poirier at UFC 302. The fight, which took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, ended with Makhachev executing a fifth-round D'arce choke to secure the victory.
Despite the lack of standout moments on the UFC 302 card, Makhachev's performance undoubtedly saved the event from appearing dull. In the post-fight press conference, Makhachev humorously acknowledged the lackluster fights and proudly stated, "I think I saved this card today."
The 32-year-old champion had to overcome a formidable challenge posed by Poirier. Although Makhachev initially controlled the fight, Poirier staged a second wind and inflicted a wide cut on Makhachev's face in the middle rounds. Undeterred, Makhachev displayed his championship mettle, ultimately securing the victory with the fight-ending choke in the final minutes.
Makhachev recognized Poirier as a formidable opponent, praising his tenacity and resilience. The victory over Poirier marked Makhachev's third successful title defense, tying him with B.J. Penn, Benson Henderson, Frankie Edgar, and his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov for the most consecutive lightweight belt defenses in UFC history.
While Makhachev acknowledges the significance of this achievement, he emphasized that his primary goal is to move up to the welterweight division and vie for a second UFC title. He expressed his desire to join the esteemed ranks of double champions and stated, "Who doesn't want to be a double champion? This is a dream for all fighters."
However, Makhachev may have to wait to fulfill his dream as UFC CEO Dana White announced plans for a rematch with Arman Tsarukyan as Makhachev's next opponent. Although Makhachev previously defeated Tsarukyan via unanimous decision, White expressed openness to the idea of Makhachev challenging for a second belt. Makhachev remains eager for new challenges and is prepared to face whatever decision the UFC makes.
With his latest victory, Makhachev further solidifies his reign as the UFC lightweight champion. Fans eagerly anticipate his next move, whether it be another defense or a move up to the welterweight division. Makhachev continues to leave his mark in the history of the sport, maintaining his position as one of the best fighters in the world.
