As the Illinois Board of Elections and the Chicago Board of Elections continue to count the votes from the Illinois Primary Election, the outcomes of three significant races are still too close to call. The Chicago Board of Elections (CBOE) stated that they are still processing mail-in ballots, and according to their director of public information, Max Bever, these ballots have a two-week period to be counted as per the Illinois election code. This would bring the final results to April 2nd.

Bever mentioned that most vote-by-mail ballots are usually returned on or immediately after election day, which means that by this weekend, a clearer picture of the results may emerge. However, he expressed concern over the shockingly low voter turnout in Chicago, revealing that only 20% of registered voters in the city had cast their ballots.

One of the races hanging in the balance is for the Democratic Party's nominee for Cook County State's Attorney. With 99% of precincts reporting, Eileen O'Neill Burke currently holds a narrow lead over Clayton Harris, with a difference of approximately 9,000 votes as of 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Another significant race to watch is Chicago's proposed real estate transfer tax, also known as the "mansion tax" or "Bring Chicago Home." Currently, the tax is a flat rate of $3.75 for every $500 of the property's price. However, if passed, the proposal would introduce a progressive structure with three tiers, reducing the rate to $3 for properties sold under $1 million, increasing it to $10 for prices between $1 million and $1.5 million, and setting it at $15 for properties over $1.5 million.

In the 12th Congressional District, incumbent Republican Representative Mike Bost is facing a primary challenge from former Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey. Bost, who received endorsements from influential figures within the Republican party, including former President Donald Trump, is seeking re-election after first winning the seat in 2014.

Meanwhile, Congressman Danny Davis is projected to win the Democratic primary in Illinois' 7th Congressional District. Davis, who has represented the district since 1997, emerged victorious against challengers Kina Collins, Melissa Conyears-Ervin, Kouri Marshall, and Nikhil Bhatia.

In another Democratic primary, Congressman Chuy García is expected to secure the nomination for Illinois' 4th Congressional District, defeating Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez. García, who has held the seat since January 2019 and previously ran for Chicago mayor twice, is anticipated to retain his position in the strongly Democratic district in the November general election.

Furthermore, the Illinois presidential primary resulted in victories for President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, who both secured enough delegates to become their party's presumptive nominees.

As the counting of votes continues, the final outcomes of these races and the impact on Illinois politics will become clearer. Additional stories and updates on Illinois' primary election day can be found by clicking here.
