In a shocking turn of events, a Mexican national identified as Brandon Ortiz-Vite has been charged with felony murder and other offenses after allegedly shooting and killing a 25-year-old Michigan woman during a failed carjacking attempt. Court documents obtained by Fox 17 reveal that Ortiz-Vite, who had been deported during the Trump administration, managed to slip back into the United States.

The victim, Ruby Garcia, was found with multiple gunshot wounds on US 131 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, late Friday night. Garcia's car was later discovered abandoned. Authorities believe that she and Ortiz-Vite were romantically involved, as text messages recovered from Garcia's cellphone indicate that the pair had planned to meet at her home on the night of her murder.

Prior to this incident, Ortiz-Vite already had a criminal history in Michigan dating back to 2017. He had been arrested in August 2020 on a bench warrant for driving violations after failing to appear in court. Subsequently, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended him and issued a notice to appear for his immigration violations.

Ortiz-Vite was ordered to be removed from the US by an immigration judge on September 24, 2020, and he was subsequently removed to Mexico on September 29, 2020. However, at an unknown date and location, the suspect reentered the US without inspection by immigration officials, raising serious questions about border security and immigration enforcement.

Michigan State Police officers were able to apprehend Ortiz-Vite after he called 911 on himself, expressing the desire to surrender. At the time of his arrest, authorities found him wearing clothes with apparent bloodstains. They also recovered a 9mm pistol, believed to be the murder weapon, in his possession.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker, during a press conference on Tuesday, described the case as another tragic instance of domestic violence homicide that has become all too common in recent years. While the motive for the initial fight between Garcia and Ortiz-Vite remains unknown, the suspect has allegedly admitted to shooting her multiple times during an argument inside the car. After the initial barrage of gunfire, Ortiz-Vite got out of the car, walked around, and shot Garcia once more, believing she was still alive. He then proceeded to dump her body on the side of the freeway before driving away.

Garcia's family is devastated by her loss. Her sister, Mavi Garcia, described her as a wonderful person who brightened up any room she entered with her beautiful smile and laugh. Ruby loved to travel, was dedicated to her work, and cherished the time spent with her family.

Ortiz-Vite has been arraigned and is currently being held without bail in the Kent County jail. In addition to the murder charge, he also faces charges of carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony use of a firearm. The case has also sparked discussions about the need for comprehensive immigration reform and enhanced border security measures to prevent the reentry of individuals who have been previously deported.
