### Hurricane Oscar Forms Off the Coast of the Bahamas
Hurricane Oscar has developed off the coast of the Bahamas, transforming quickly from a tropical storm to a hurricane. The National Hurricane Center in Miami has labeled Oscar as a "tiny" storm. This event marks the formation of the 15th named storm of the current hurricane season.
Oscar initially appeared as a tropical storm near the Turks and Caicos islands on Saturday before escalating into a hurricane. In response, the Bahamas government issued a hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands as well as the southeastern region of the Bahamas. Similarly, Cuba has placed the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tunas under a hurricane watch.
Both the Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas are bracing for heavy rainfall expected later tonight and tomorrow. The National Hurricane Center has indicated that these rains will likely extend to eastern Cuba by Sunday. Currently, the storm's peak sustained winds have reached 80 mph, with even stronger gusts recorded. The center of Hurricane Oscar was situated approximately 165 miles east-southeast of the southeastern Bahamas and 470 miles east of Camaguey, Cuba.
In related weather developments, Tropical Storm Nadine emerged a few hours earlier in the western Caribbean. Moving westward toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Nadine made landfall near Belize City around noon Eastern time, bringing heavy rain and storm conditions to parts of Belize and the Yucatan peninsula. A tropical storm warning is currently in effect for areas including Belize City and extending from Belize to Cancun, Mexico, encompassing Cozumel.
The Atlantic hurricane season, which starts on June 1 and concludes on November 30, typically sees the most activity between mid-August and mid-October. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes that hurricane activity generally peaks in mid-September. In addition, parts of Florida's Gulf Coast are still recovering from the impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, which struck the region in quick succession in recent weeks.
