Lawyers representing Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, are set to ask a judge to dismiss tax charges against him during a hearing on Wednesday. They argue that the case is politically motivated, alleging that prosecutors gave in to pressure from Republican lawmakers who initiated an impeachment inquiry against the president.

Hunter Biden's legal team, led by attorney Abbe Lowell, will present their case in federal court in Los Angeles before U.S. District Judge Mark Scarsi. The hearing will focus on various motions filed by both Biden's lawyers and special counsel David Weiss' office, represented by lead prosecutor Leo Wise.

The courtroom also saw the presence of David Chesnoff, the attorney for ex-FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, who faces charges of providing false information to the FBI about Hunter Biden and his father. Chesnoff expressed interest in the dismissal arguments, as they could potentially impact Smirnov's case.

Last year, Weiss charged Hunter Biden with nine tax-related offenses, including three felony charges and six misdemeanors, alleging that he evaded federal taxes amounting to at least $1.4 million. The indictment claimed that Hunter Biden had spent large sums of money on an extravagant lifestyle, including activities related to drugs, escorts, luxury hotels, rental properties, cars, and personal items.

Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the charges in January and his legal team filed motions last month seeking their dismissal. The defense argues that prosecutors succumbed to political pressure and overstepped their authority, reneging on agreements and presenting misleading evidence to the court.

Federal prosecutors have countered Hunter Biden's claims, characterizing them as a conspiracy theory fabricated to evade tax charges following the collapse of an earlier plea deal. They dispute any connection between the prosecution and politicians, emphasizing that the charges are independent of any external influence.

In addition to the tax charges, Hunter Biden also faces federal gun charges in Delaware for allegedly possessing a gun while using narcotics. The trial for these charges is scheduled for June.

Hunter Biden's involvement in House Republicans' impeachment inquiry into the president has raised his profile significantly. He recently gave a closed-door deposition with the GOP-led House Oversight and Judiciary committees, criticizing the investigation as a "charade" in his prepared remarks.

The outcome of Wednesday's hearing could determine the course of the tax charges against Hunter Biden, as his legal team fights to have the case dismissed on the grounds of political motivation.
