Hunter Biden's Attorneys File Motions to Dismiss Tax Charges, Claiming Selective Prosecution

Hunter Biden's attorneys have filed nine motions on Tuesday seeking to dismiss tax-related charges brought against him by special counsel David Weiss in a California federal court last year. The attorneys argued that Hunter Biden was being selectively targeted for prosecution, as they claimed that the special counsel has gone to extreme lengths in bringing charges against him that would not have been filed against anyone else.
One of the arguments made by Hunter Biden's attorneys is that the statute of limitations had expired for some of the charges, there were duplicative charges for the same tax year, and several charges should be dismissed for improper venue. They also stated that Hunter Biden had already paid his taxes with interest and penalties for one of the tax charges stemming from 2019, which should preclude criminal tax charges.
Moreover, the attorneys criticized the special counsel's handling of the case, alleging that Weiss was unlawfully appointed as Special Counsel and that the funding for the investigation and prosecution was not approved by Congress. They also raised concerns about leaks from IRS whistleblowers impacting the prosecution and argued that the indictment against Hunter Biden contained inflammatory characterizations and gratuitous facts that could prejudice a jury.
Hunter Biden had previously pleaded not guilty to nine tax-related charges during his arraignment in January after being indicted in the Central District of California on allegations of failing to pay taxes. These recent motions by his attorneys echoed arguments made in a separate gun-related case, with a focus on challenging the specific charges he faces in federal court in California.
NBC News has sought comments from the White House and the special counsel's office regarding this development.
