In a recent turn of events, Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, expressed disappointment with the decision made by U.S. District Judge Marc Scarsi of Los Angeles, who refused to dismiss the tax charges against the first son. The attorney stated that they will persistently challenge the "abnormal way" in which Special Counsel David Weiss has handled the case.
The charges against Hunter Biden stem from an accusation by Weiss, who claims that the president's son engaged in a four-year scheme to evade paying $1.4 million in taxes. Allegedly, Hunter Biden did not pay his federal income taxes from January 2017 to October 2020, while also filing false tax reports.
Despite Hunter Biden's lawyers asserting that federal prosecutors succumbed to political pressure from Republicans, Judge Scarsi rejected their request to have the charges dismissed. Lowell argued that Hunter Biden had immunity under a previous plea deal, which had ultimately fallen through.
"We strongly disagree with the Court's decision and will continue to vigorously pursue Mr. Biden's challenges to the abnormal way the Special Counsel handled this investigation and charged this case," Lowell declared in a statement.
The indictment against Hunter Biden includes three felonies and six misdemeanors regarding the allegedly owed $1.4 million in taxes. However, it is important to note that these taxes have since been paid.
Weiss further alleged that Hunter Biden spent large sums of money on an extravagant lifestyle instead of fulfilling his tax obligations. The special counsel also claimed that in 2018, he failed to pay his outstanding and overdue taxes for the tax year 2015.
Hunter Biden, who pleaded not guilty to all charges, had previously been involved in a diversion agreement on the tax charges. The agreement was part of an original plea deal that fell apart in July. At that time, Hunter Biden was prepared to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax counts, enabling him to avoid jail time on a felony gun charge. However, the deal collapsed during his court appearance.
Despite the ongoing tax charges, Lowell is also seeking the dismissal of gun charges that Weiss brought against Hunter Biden in Delaware. The president's son pleaded not guilty to those charges in October.
With the legal battle intensifying, it remains to be seen how Hunter Biden's case will unfold in the coming months. The attorney's refusal to back down suggests a protracted struggle on the horizon.
