Authorities in Deer Park, Texas, made a grim discovery on Thursday at the site of a pipeline fire that has been raging for four days. The fire, sparked by an SUV hitting an aboveground valve on a pipeline in suburban Houston, has significantly reduced in size since it first ignited on Monday. As the blaze diminished, investigators were able to access the area around the damaged pipeline in Deer Park.
Law enforcement officials removed a white SUV from the scene on Thursday morning and subsequently made a distressing find inside the vehicle while processing it. Human remains were discovered within the SUV, as confirmed by the officials in Deer Park through a statement. The Harris County medical examiners have now taken over the process of identifying the individual, a task expected to be time-consuming.
The incident occurred when the driver of the SUV, for reasons yet unknown, veered off from a Walmart parking lot in Deer Park, maneuvered through a fence surrounding the valve equipment, and collided with the pipeline, causing the fire. Although the details leading to the crash are scant, investigations are ongoing. Energy Transfer, the company that owns the pipeline, has classified the event as an accident, and authorities have ruled out any suspicion of a deliberate terrorist act.
