According to multiple reports, the Houston Astros have emerged as potential suitors for Detroit Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty. The Athletic, MLB.com, and the New York Post have all reported on the Astros' interest in Flaherty, along with their pursuit of Toronto Blue Jays lefty Yusei Kikuchi.

Flaherty, who has been in phenomenal form for the Tigers in 2024, is considered one of the most sought-after rental pitchers in the market. With a remarkable 2.95 ERA in 106 2/3 innings, including 19 walks and 133 strikeouts, the 28-year-old has proven to be one of the league's toughest competitors.

The Tigers, who are currently 6 1/2 games out of the final Wild Card spot, have been playing well recently but are expected to entertain offers for their players with expiring contracts. Aside from Flaherty, this group includes catcher Carson Kelly, infielder Gio Urshela, and infielder/outfielder Mark Canha.

Flaherty's next scheduled start is on Monday night against the Cleveland Guardians, which is just one day before the MLB trade deadline. However, there is a possibility that he may be scratched from his start if a deal is underway.

The Astros, who are currently in first place in the American League West, one game ahead of the Seattle Mariners, have their sights set on adding another starting pitcher to their roster. With players like Framber Valdez, Ronel Blanco, and Hunter Brown already performing well, a pitcher of Flaherty's caliber would greatly strengthen their rotation.

If a trade were to materialize, the Tigers could potentially target a high-level prospect from the Astros, such as shortstop Brice Matthews or infielder Zach Dezenzo. Alternatively, they may explore a package deal consisting of multiple lesser prospects. Additionally, the Tigers could sweeten the deal by including Canha or Urshela, giving the Astros added depth on their bench and a potential platoon option with left-handed hitting first baseman Jon Singleton.

The Astros' interest in Flaherty comes as no surprise, considering their track record of success in recent years. With a streak of seven consecutive playoff appearances, including four American League pennants and two World Series titles, the Astros are determined to bolster their roster and aim for yet another deep postseason run.

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the potential deal between the Astros and the Tigers, which could have significant implications for both teams as they continue their pursuit of postseason success.
