In a powerful show of solidarity, over 1,000 Jewish members of the entertainment community, including top Hollywood stars and industry insiders, have come together to denounce the controversial speech given by Oscar-winning director Jonathan Glazer. The open letter, which repudiates Glazer's remarks, gained widespread attention overnight when it went viral.
Glazer's speech took place during the Academy Awards ceremony earlier this month, where his film "The Zone of Interest" was recognized with two awards, including Best International Film. The movie depicts the chilling story of a Nazi family living near Auschwitz. However, Glazer's remarks drew sharp criticism for drawing a moral equivalence between the Nazi regime and Israel.
The group of signatories, which included prominent actors such as Michael Rapaport, Debra Messing, Julianna Margulies, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tovah Feldshuh, Lisa Edelstein, and Brett Gelman, joined together to refute Glazer's attempt to link the Holocaust to Israel's actions. They firmly asserted that the Jewish people's right to live in Israel is not a result of the Holocaust, but rather a historic claim dating back centuries.
The open letter also condemned the use of terms like "occupation" to describe the Jewish people defending their homeland. The signatories argued that such language distorts history, perpetuates anti-Jewish sentiment, and contributes to growing antisemitism worldwide.
Those who signed the letter expressed their disappointment and hurt over Glazer's speech, highlighting the lack of consideration for how Jewish people would react to such remarks. They emphasized that Israel, while tragic civilian deaths occur in Gaza, does not target civilians but rather focuses on countering Hamas, the genocidal terrorist organization responsible for ongoing conflict.
Glazer's words were not only rejected by industry figures, but also by one of the executive producers of his own film, Danny Cohen. Cohen emphasized that he fundamentally disagreed with Glazer's perspective and recognized the legitimate anger and upset that his remarks had caused.
The condemnation of Glazer's speech extended beyond the entertainment community, with The Holocaust Survivors' Foundation also issuing an open letter expressing anguish and outrage. The letter criticized Glazer for equating Israel's self-defense measures against Hamas's brutality with the Holocaust. The foundation's president, 94-year-old Holocaust survivor David Schaecter, described Glazer's comments as factually inaccurate and morally indefensible.
The overwhelming response to Glazer's speech, reflected in the powerful open letters and the support they received from Hollywood stars and industry insiders, highlights the deep-rooted commitment to combating antisemitism and preserving the historical truth of the Jewish people. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how Glazer will respond to the backlash.
Representatives for Glazer did not respond to requests for comment on this matter.
