An unprecedented heatwave has engulfed the western region of the United States, shattering temperature records and prompting alerts for millions of Americans. This intense weather event, already considered the hottest summer on record, has brought scorching temperatures to cities from Phoenix to Los Angeles to Seattle.
The desert city of Indio in California experienced its hottest 5 September day ever, with temperatures reaching a sweltering 121F (49.4C). This broke the previous record set in 2020, while nearby Palm Springs tied its heat record at the same scorching temperature. The region has also witnessed its all-time high of 124F (51.1C) back in July. Although the Los Angeles region has not yet broken any records, the area is bracing itself for a prolonged period of triple-digit temperatures.
As the heatwave persists, Phoenix marked an astonishing 100 consecutive days with temperatures exceeding 100F (37.8C), further exacerbating the intensity of the current heatwave. Phoenix also recorded its hottest 5 September day on record, with the mercury soaring to 116F (46.7C). In the typically cool city of Seattle, which prides itself on its temperate climate, Thursday witnessed the breaking of its daily temperature record with a scorching 89F (31.7C). Schools in Portland were forced to close early as the blistering heat became too dangerous for students.
This relentless heatwave is not limited to the United States alone. The summer of 2024 has been declared the hottest on record globally, with the Earth experiencing its hottest day ever recorded on 22 July. This day surpassed the previous record set just one day before, indicating the alarming trend of rising temperatures worldwide.
Experts have raised concerns about the increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of heatwaves, attributing them directly to the climate crisis. As the planet continues to grapple with the consequences of global warming, heatwaves have become one of the most prominent and dangerous weather events. The impact of the climate crisis is becoming painfully evident, with extreme heat posing significant risks to human health, agriculture, and overall ecosystems.
Authorities and communities across the US west are taking proactive measures to mitigate the effects of this historic heatwave, focusing on ensuring the safety and well-being of residents. As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, it is clear that urgent action is needed to combat the climate crisis and protect our planet for future generations.
