A recent survey conducted by 154 historians and presidential experts has revealed interesting insights into the ranking of former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. The 2024 edition of the Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey places Biden in 14th place, just ahead of Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan, while Trump ranks at the bottom in 45th place.

Experts noted that while partisanship and ideology do not significantly influence the rankings, there are distinctions based on these factors. Interestingly, conservatives rated Biden at 30th place, while liberals rated him 13th and moderates ranked him 20th. Conversely, all groups agreed that Trump was among the bottom five presidents due to his presidency being marked by a flouting of historical norms.

The survey's findings also highlight the subjective nature of measuring presidential greatness, with Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and George Washington being the top three presidents, scoring above 90 on a scale of "overall greatness." Trump received the lowest rating at 10.92, while Biden's rating tied with John Adams at 62.66.

The survey emerges amidst the backdrop of the 2024 presidential race, where Biden and Trump are facing contrasting challenges. While historians may favor Biden, polls show a lack of confidence in his policies and age, while Trump faces felony charges and lingering disapproval from his one-term presidency.

Overall, the survey serves as a platform for historians and experts to provide their opinions on the presidential legacy of current and past leaders. It reflects the diverse perspectives that exist in evaluating presidential performance and highlights the complexity of defining greatness in the context of U.S. history.
