High Winds and Blowing Dust Cause Temporary Closure of Interstate 70 in Kansas

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) temporarily closed Interstate 70 in both directions between the Colorado state line and Colby on Sunday afternoon. The closure was due to low visibility caused by high winds and blowing dust, as well as the need to clear the roadway following multiple vehicle crashes. However, the interstate has since been reopened.
Motorists traveling through northwest Kansas were strongly advised by the KHP to exercise caution and, if possible, delay their trips. Those who were already on the road during the closure were instructed to seek shelter at a safe location until conditions improved.
One traveler, Brenda Platt, who was on her way from Burlington to Idaho with a dog, witnessed a massive dust cloud moving into the area. Platt recounted her experience of suddenly encountering the dust cloud on I-70, emphasizing the importance of braking gradually to avoid collisions. As visibility dropped to zero, many drivers found themselves braking abruptly and veering off into ditches to avoid accidents.
Platt managed to capture video footage of significant wrecks that occurred on westbound I-70 once she had parked safely. She commended the first responders who worked tirelessly to assist those involved in the accidents, highlighting the potentially dangerous nature of the situation.
To stay updated on road closures and current conditions, drivers are encouraged to visit www.kandrive.gov or call 511 within Kansas or 866-511-5368 outside of Kansas.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant and prepared during adverse weather conditions, especially when visibility is severely limited. Motorists are advised to follow all safety precautions and stay informed about road conditions before embarking on their journeys.
