St. Lawrence County in New York experienced widespread damage to its infrastructure as a result of a powerful storm that struck on Friday. Emergency Services Director Matt Denner revealed that over 100 roads and bridges across the county were affected by the storm, which brought heavy rainfall and caused flash flooding.
The remnants of Hurricane Debby wreaked havoc on the region, leading to the closure of numerous roads and bridges. As of early Saturday afternoon, the county's website listed more than 50 major roads and bridges that were shut down due to the storm damage. Denner pointed out that this is only a partial list, as many town roads have also been rendered impassable.
Highway crews have been dispatched to assess the damage and work diligently to reopen the affected roads. The severity of the destruction became evident with the loss of Windmill Road in South Colton, which was completely washed away by the force of the rushing water. Reports indicate that the town of Colton has declared a state of emergency in response to the widespread devastation.
As a result of the storm's impact, the travel ban in St. Lawrence County has been downgraded to a travel advisory. While minor injuries were reported, primarily from weather-related car accidents, Denner assured the public that there were no major casualties. The Raquette and Grass rivers, which experienced record-breaking water levels, are now receding.
Local news outlet 7 News has dedicated its resources to closely following the aftermath of the storm, providing comprehensive coverage of the recovery efforts. As the county continues to assess the extent of the damage, it is anticipated that significant resources and time will be required to restore normalcy.
The community remains encouraged by the swift response of highway crews and emergency services in addressing the damage caused by the storm. With a collective effort, St. Lawrence County will bounce back from this natural disaster and rebuild its crucial transportation infrastructure, ensuring the safety and convenience of its residents.
