At least four people have tragically lost their lives, thousands of homes have been damaged, and hundreds have been forced to evacuate as the central and eastern regions of Europe grapple with some of the heaviest rainfall in recent years. A slow-moving low-pressure system known as Storm Boris has unleashed a month's worth of rain onto historical capitals such as Vienna, Bratislava, and Prague, causing widespread chaos and destruction.
Romania has been particularly hard-hit, with four fatalities reported and hundreds of people left stranded in flooded areas. Rescue services have been working tirelessly in the heavily affected counties, where authorities have expressed concern over the recorded rainfall levels, the highest in a century over the past 24 hours. "The effects were most critical in seven localities," shared Romania's Interior Minister, Cătălin Predoiu, during an interview with CNN affiliate Antena 3. "We have already intervened to save 95 people, but sadly, four individuals have been found dead in their houses or yards."
Poland and the Czech Republic are also grappling with overflowing rivers due to the heavy downpour. In Poland's southern region, authorities have issued evacuations for the town of Glucholazy, as the water level of the Biala Glicholaska river rose by a significant two meters, or 6.5 feet, overnight. Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak acknowledged the challenging situation, stating that attention is now focused on the threats likely to arise in the coming hours following a challenging night and numerous incidents.
In the Czech Republic, authorities have implemented mandatory evacuations for certain areas where significant flooding is anticipated. Footage released by the Czech Republic Fire and Rescue Service showcased inundated streets in the municipality of Benešově nad Černou, where two women who disregarded evacuation orders had to be rescued by boat.
Germany, particularly the southern and eastern states, is also bracing itself for potential flooding. Flood warnings have been issued for rivers in the state of Saxony. Neighboring Austria has not been spared either, as heavy rainfall has caused water levels in several rivers to rise, prompting rescue services to be deployed overnight.
With widespread and severe flooding predicted to persist throughout the weekend, red alerts, the highest level of warning, have been issued for portions of Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovakia. Meteoalarm has linked this level of alert to "intense meteorological phenomena" and warns of likely major damage.
As affected countries continue to battle against the elements, communities remain on high alert and emergency responders have been mobilized. Efforts are focused on rescuing those in distress and mitigating further damage. The aftermath of Storm Boris serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of nature and the need for preparedness in the face of extreme weather events.
