In the past week, a scorching heatwave has gripped the US west coast, leaving millions of Americans under a heat alert. Now, the heatwave is moving eastward into the midwest and south-east, with the National Weather Service warning of near record-breaking temperatures in several regions.

According to reports, numerous cities along the east coast, including Baltimore and Washington DC, are expected to experience temperatures as high as 100°F (38°C) this Tuesday. The heat is also forecasted to affect New York City, where temperatures in the mid-90s are anticipated, accompanied by a heat index between 95-100°F from Monday to Wednesday. Some areas around the city may even reach a heat index of up to 105°F.

The impact of the heatwave is expected to be widespread, with over 245 million Americans set to experience temperatures of 90°F or higher between Sunday and Wednesday. Alarmingly, at least 30 million people will face temperatures at or above 100°F, according to AccuWeather forecasts. Cities like Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina might also see record-breaking temperatures, while St. Louis, Missouri, anticipates temperatures near or above 100°F through Monday.

As the heatwave shifts east, the National Weather Service has urged caution, particularly for vulnerable populations. They advise that the elderly, small children, individuals on medication, and those with weight or alcohol problems are most susceptible to heat-related stresses. They emphasize the importance of checking in with these vulnerable individuals and helping them seek relief from the extreme heat and humidity.

This heatwave comes at a time when global temperatures continue to rise. June 2024 was declared the hottest month of June on record, marking the 13th consecutive hottest month globally. A staggering 14.5% of the world's surface reported record heat, surpassing the previous year's June by 7.4%.

In the midst of this heatwave, Las Vegas, Nevada, witnessed a record-breaking seven consecutive days of temperatures at or above 115°F. On July 7th, Las Vegas recorded its all-time highest temperature of 120°F, emblematic of the extreme weather conditions plaguing the nation.

Tragically, the heatwave has claimed at least 37 lives across the US so far in July. However, this figure is likely an underestimate, considering the time it takes for investigations into heat-related deaths to be completed.

As the heatwave engulfs different parts of the US, it is crucial for individuals and communities to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and support those who are most vulnerable during these extreme weather conditions.
