Lightspeed Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures co-led the investment round, with participation from the Mass General Brigham Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Fund, Kaiser Permanente Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, and CVS Health Ventures. This funding round follows shortly after Abridge's $30 million Series B funding, bringing the company's post-money valuation to $850 million.
The CEO of Abridge, Shiv Rao, shared that the company has seen significant commercial momentum, deploying its software in 10 different health systems and contracting over 10,000 clinicians, including the recent addition of Yale New Haven Health. The new investment will be utilized to expand sales into more hospitals and further invest in technical research and development.
Abridge has developed AI models to enhance speech recognition, language processing, and structuring medical notes, with plans to refine its software to extract actionable information from medical notes automatically. The company aims to improve clinical documentation by prompting doctors about potentially missed details in their notes, enhancing communication within the care team, generating visit summaries for patients, and ensuring accurate billing coding.
Abridge is currently in direct competition with Nuance, another major player in the healthcare technology space, both developing technology in collaboration with healthcare records giant Epic Systems. While Abridge positions itself as the "AI layer" complementing electronic health records, it faces the potential challenge of becoming indispensable to healthcare providers and patients.
Industry expert Paul Ricci, former CEO of Nuance, expressed confidence in Abridge's success and the coexistence of multiple players in the automated medical scribe sector. Rai emphasized that a more comprehensive doctor's note will lead to improved patient care and incentivize better communication practices within the healthcare industry.
