In a remarkable display of skill, Hayden Springer joined golfing history by shooting a sensational 59 in the first round of the John Deere Classic. His score tied the record set by John Deere veteran, Paul Goydos, in 2010.
Springer's incredible round began with a 13-foot eagle putt on the par-5 second hole, setting the tone for what was to follow. He then followed up with four consecutive birdies, showcasing his impressive form early on. Maintaining his momentum, Springer added two more birdies on holes 8 and 9, turning in a scorching 9-under par 27.
After a solid stretch of pars to start the back nine, Springer birdied the 15th hole before delivering a dramatic finish. From 55 yards out, he holed out with a remarkable chip for an eagle on the par-5 17th. To cap off his historic round, Springer sunk a 12-foot, 8-inch birdie putt on the last hole to finish with a remarkable 12-under 59 at the TPC Deere Run.
Following his extraordinary achievement, an elated Springer expressed his astonishment. "I'm feeling good. Kind of, I don't know, at a loss for words in terms of being able to do that," he said. "I feel like that's one of the rare things in golf, so to kind of have that opportunity and pull it off, it feels pretty special."
Springer's feat marks the 14th sub-60 score in PGA Tour history and the second 59 recorded in just three weeks, with Cameron Young achieving the same score in the Travelers Championship third round. Despite the impressive rounds, neither Young (T-9) nor Goydos (runner-up) went on to win their respective events.
Currently, Springer holds a commanding four-shot lead over Englishman Harry Hall in the clubhouse. However, he will face tough competition as he seeks to secure victory in the John Deere Classic.
The PGA Tour record for the lowest round stands at 58, set by Jim Furyk during the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship. Furyk is one of only 13 players to have shot a 59 in PGA Tour history. Of those, only five have managed to break 60 and win, with Brandt Snedeker being the most recent in the 2018 Wyndham Championship.
Springer's remarkable accomplishment comes at a significant time in his career. After earning his Tour card for the first time in December at Q-School and struggling with missed cuts, he recently reunited with his childhood coach, Rosey Bartlett. The decision has paid off, as Springer tied for 10th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week before his record-breaking performance at the John Deere Classic.
Reflecting on his journey, Springer shared that the memories of his late daughter have fueled his determination. This emotional drive, combined with the support of his coach, has propelled him to new heights in the world of professional golf.
As the John Deere Classic continues, fans eagerly await to see if Springer can maintain his exceptional form and turn his historic round into a tournament victory.
