Interim President of Harvard University, Alan Garber, issued a strong statement denouncing the sharing of an antisemitic cartoon by student organizations and a faculty group. The cartoon, which depicted a hand marked with a Star of David and a dollar sign holding nooses around the necks of Muhammad Ali and former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, was part of an Instagram post discussing the historical ties between Black liberation movements and Palestinian liberation.
Harvard expressed deep disappointment in the use of antisemitic tropes, calling the act "grossly irresponsible and profoundly offensive." The Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee, Harvard's African American Resistance Organization, and Harvard Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine, who shared the cartoon on social media, later apologized for their actions. The groups acknowledged the harm caused by the offensive caricature and expressed regret over their oversight.
Garber stressed that although the groups have distanced themselves from the cartoon, the damage remains, and the university will review the situation to determine further steps. He also indicated that this incident comes in the wake of his predecessor's resignation amid backlash over her handling of antisemitism allegations and academic plagiarism.
The condemnation of the antisemitic cartoon underscores Harvard University's commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive academic community.
