Hammerhead Shark Chases Tarpons Eerily Close to St. Petersburg Beachgoers

In a chilling incident captured on drone video by kayak company See Through Canoe, a hammerhead shark was seen chasing tarpons dangerously close to beachgoers in St. Petersburg. The footage, recorded on June 6, shows the shark swimming underneath paddleboarders and approaching people in the water as it pursued the fish near the shoreline.

This sighting comes just a day before two separate shark attacks occurred on Florida's Gulf Coast, leaving three individuals injured. On Friday, a 45-year-old woman had to undergo a lower left arm amputation after sustaining significant trauma to her mid-section and pelvic area. Additionally, two girls aged 15 and 17 were attacked, with one reportedly in critical condition due to trauma to an upper and lower extremity.

Authorities are now issuing warnings about the dangers of sharks along Gulf Coast beaches. While it is unclear if the individuals were attacked by the same shark or what type of shark was involved in the incidents, beachgoers are being urged to remain vigilant while in the water. The recent attacks raise concerns as no shark attacks have been reported in the Tampa Bay area this year.

The video captured by See Through Canoe not only highlights the close encounter between the hammerhead shark and tarpons but serves as a reminder of the potential dangers lurking in the ocean. The company, known for its production of clear kayaks, has been capturing stunning footage of marine wildlife since 2007.

As speculation grows around the increase in shark activity, officials suggest that the recent attacks may be attributed to small fish traveling near the shore. With this in mind, beachgoers are advised to swim carefully, respect the Gulf, stay hydrated, and be cautious of their loved ones.
