Law enforcement sources have confirmed that Shannon Cortez Gooden, a 38-year-old man with a history of assault charges, was found dead inside a Burnsville home where a tragic incident unfolded. Gooden, who had previously petitioned to have his gun rights restored in 2020, was involved in a standoff with officers early Sunday morning.

Authorities were called to the residence on 33rd Avenue South around 1:50 a.m., where Gooden was barricaded inside with family members, including seven children between the ages of 2 and 15. After a prolonged negotiation period, Gooden opened fire on the officers, resulting in the fatal shooting of Burnsville officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27 years old, and firefighter/paramedic Adam Finseth, aged 40. Sergeant Adam Medlicott was also injured during the exchange of gunfire.

Law enforcement received news that the suspect had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 8 a.m. Sunday. The medical examiner is yet to officially identify the gunman, but sources have confirmed that it was Shannon Cortez Gooden.

The tragic incident has left the community in mourning and serves as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face in the line of duty.
