Greek officials are intensifying their search for an American tourist who went missing earlier this week while visiting Mathraki, a small island located west of Corfu. This incident comes just days after another U.S. tourist vanished while vacationing in the nearby area.
The unidentified man was last seen on Tuesday at a tavern in Mathraki, where he was staying with a Greek American friend, according to investigators. The friend became concerned when he returned home on Thursday to find the door of the house open, lights on, and the air conditioning unit running, but no sign of the missing American. Along with the man himself, his identification and travel documents were also missing.
Since Mathraki has no police station or coast guard, officers from Corfu have been called in to assist with the investigation. With only 40-50 permanent residents during winter, Mathraki is a popular summer destination for many Greek Americans. However, the search operation has been hindered by the rough weather, leading rescue teams to temporarily suspend their efforts on Friday. They are planning to continue the search on Saturday.
In a parallel incident, another American tourist named Albert Calibet, 59, has been reported missing on the nearby island of Amorgos. Calibet, a former Los Angeles Sheriff's Department deputy, failed to return from a hike on Tuesday. He was last seen at 11 a.m. by fellow walkers he encountered on a trail. Despite Calibet's experience hiking in the area, concerns have grown due to the soaring temperatures, with Greece experiencing a heatwave this week, with temperatures surpassing 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Greek authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the missing tourists to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigations. As the search for both the unidentified man on Mathraki Island and Albert Calibet on Amorgos continues, hopes remain high for their safe return.
