In a recent announcement, Google revealed that on April 8th, it will no longer provide support for its Google Nest Secure home security system. This means that users' Nest Secure devices will no longer be able to connect to the internet, effectively rendering them useless. The discontinuation of Nest Secure was initially disclosed by Google in 2020, giving users ample time to consider alternative options. However, for those who have procrastinated, the deadline has arrived.

Google, being a significant investor in ADT, took steps to offer Nest Secure users alternatives. These alternatives include a free ADT Self Setup system, valued up to $485, or a $200 credit in the Google Store. ADT has confirmed that the offer for the free system will be valid until May 7th, 2024, allowing users a limited window to take advantage of the opportunity.

ADT's Self Setup system was launched in March of 2023 and stands as their second DIY security system. While it integrates with various Nest hardware and works with Google Home, it is not a direct replacement for Nest Secure. The system offers options for professional monitoring through ADT, but users also have the choice to monitor their homes themselves. ADT has assured users that the Self Setup system will continue to receive updates and benefits resulting from the ADT/Google partnership, potentially leading to improved integration with Google Home in the future.

Recent rumors suggest that a new ADT Smart Home Security system, developed in collaboration with Google, may offer features reminiscent of the beloved Nest Secure system. Speculation about this new system has been fueled by details hidden on ADT's site, a leaked setup video, and searchable support pages. However, no official announcement has been made regarding the launch date of this new system.

For users who have not yet taken advantage of ADT's Self Setup offer, the question arises as to whether the new ADT Smart Home Security system will be available before the free offer expires on May 7th. Considering ADT's potential inventory of Self Setup systems to distribute, it is likely that the launch of ADT Smart Home Security will come after the expiration of the vouchers. In such a case, users may need to explore non-ADT alternatives.

Fortunately, several DIY security systems exist that can be integrated with Google Home and work well with Google devices such as Nest cameras, thermostats, and smart home hubs. Among these alternatives, two notable options are Arlo and Abode.

Arlo's Home Security System, priced at $199.99, offers sleek multifunctional sensors that serve the same purpose as Nest Secure's Nest Detects. While it lacks the touch-to-disarm feature of Nest Secure, it compensates by working as leak, temperature, light, and tilt sensors, with the added capability of listening for smoke and CO alarms. Integration with Google Home is possible through the Google Home app, although controlling Google devices through the Arlo app is not possible. Additionally, professional monitoring with Arlo cameras costs $24.99 per month.

Abode is a more traditional DIY smart home security system with extensive options for specific-purpose sensors. It can also integrate with a wide range of Z-Wave, Zigbee, and other smart home devices, making it suitable for comprehensive smart home setups. Pricing for Abode starts at $139.99, and integration with Google Home allows control through the Google Home app. Additional features such as live feeds from Nest cameras can also be accessed from the Abode app, provided users opt for an Abode plan, which starts at $7 per month and includes professional monitoring.

For users seeking to entirely sever ties with Google, Ecobee's new security system presents a compelling option. With a starting price of $269.99, this system offers simplicity comparable to Nest Secure, utilizing multifunctional door/window sensors that double as occupancy sensors. While it lacks Google Home support, the system can be controlled through a built-in keypad on the Ecobee thermostat. Additionally, integration with Ecobee's indoor and doorbell cameras is possible, making for a well-rounded security solution. The cost of professional monitoring for Ecobee's security system is $10 per month, making it an affordable choice.

Although a direct replacement for Google's Nest Secure system remains elusive, there are viable alternatives available for users seeking simple and user-friendly options that integrate with Google Home. While the future holds promise with potential advancements through the ADT/Google partnership, it seems unlikely that Nest Secure users will have access to the new system before the ADT offer expires next month. As the deadline approaches, users are encouraged to consider alternative options suited to their specific needs and preferences.
