Following a civil fraud judgment that ordered former President Donald Trump to pay roughly $355 million in penalties for inflating the value of his assets, a GoFundMe page was created by Elena Cardone to aid in fundraising to cover the unjust judgment. At the time of writing on February 19, the fundraiser had amassed around $409,000 in donations but falls short of the over $450 million total judgment, which includes a 9 percent interest rate mandated by New York State. Dr. Mark Shanahan from the University of Surrey commented that the funds raised are a fraction of what Trump owes and may not even cover the interest on the fine. Trump, along with top executives at The Trump Organization, were found guilty of fraud, leading to penalties and restrictions on serving as corporate officers in New York for various durations. Trump has expressed plans to appeal the ruling, with his lawyer Alina Habba announcing an appeal will be filed to overturn what she described as an "egregious verdict." Conversely, New York Attorney General Letitia James hailed the judge's ruling as "a massive victory," emphasizing that no one, not even Trump, is above the law.
