In response to a crushing injury and the need for bullpen reinforcements, the San Francisco Giants have made several roster moves. Tyler Fitzgerald, who had a scorching-hot week in Triple-A, has returned to the team, and the contracts of minor leaguers Spencer Howard and Trenton Brooks have been purchased.
The roster shuffle comes after LaMonte Wade Jr. strained his left hamstring while running the bases, forcing him onto the Injured List. As a result, the Giants have made additional adjustments by designating Drew Pomeranz and Ryan McKenna for assignment to clear spots for Howard and Brooks.
With the absence of Wade, the team sought to bring in another left-handed bat, and Brooks fits the bill perfectly. Acquired from the Oakland Athletics last summer in exchange for reliever Sean Newcomb, Brooks boasts an impressive .426 On-Base Percentage (OBP) in Triple-A. He possesses a similar playing profile to Wade, who currently leads the majors in this category.
In light of McKenna's departure, the Giants have brought back Fitzgerald, who made quite an impression during his time in Triple-A. With six home runs in as many games and the honor of being named Player of the Week in the Pacific Coast League, Fitzgerald will likely see most of his playing time in the outfield and as a pinch-runner. Marco Luciano and Brett Wisely will remain on the roster alongside Fitzgerald.
Meanwhile, Howard, a former second-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies, joins the Giants as a pitcher. Expected to provide multiple innings on Tuesday night after opener Erik Miller, the 27-year-old had a 5.90 ERA in Triple-A, accompanied by an impressive 57 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings.
As for McKenna, he had a short stint with the Giants, with just six at-bats after being acquired from the Baltimore Orioles. However, he did make a significant contribution to the team's comeback win in New York by stealing second base after running for Wilmer Flores. On the other hand, Pomeranz, who was signed during the road trip, did not make an appearance in a game during his second stint with the Giants.
The roster moves have been made with the intention of adding balance and strengthening the Giants' lineup, particularly with the loss of Wade and the need for additional bullpen support. With Fitzgerald, Howard, and Brooks now part of the team, the Giants look to maintain their strong performance as the season progresses.
