Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole will make his long-awaited season debut today for the New York Yankees. Cole has been sidelined due to elbow inflammation, forcing the Yankees to make corresponding roster moves to accommodate his return from the 60-day injured list. Taking the mound opposite Orioles rookie Cade Povich, Cole faces a tough assignment as the Orioles' lineup has been performing above league-average this season.
In another notable return, Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller is also set to make his comeback today against Rockies right-hander Ryan Feltner in Colorado. Miller, who showed promise with a 3.76 ERA in his rookie season last year, will provide a boost to the Dodgers' rotation after being sidelined since April.
The Dodgers' rotation may see further changes in the near future. Walker Buehler, who has struggled since his return from Tommy John surgery, may be given some time to reset. Manager Dave Roberts revealed that an IL stint for Buehler is being considered, possibly opening the door for rookie Landon Knack to step in. Additionally, Clayton Kershaw is ahead of schedule in his rehab from shoulder surgery and is set to begin a rehab assignment soon.
However, the Orioles are dealing with an injury concern of their own. Infielder Jordan Westburg exited yesterday's game with a left hip contusion after colliding with Juan Soto on the basepaths. Westburg's impact on the Orioles' lineup has been significant this season, and his absence will be felt. Ramon Urias, a Gold Glove award winner at third base in 2022, is likely to take on a larger role if Westburg requires more time to recover.
The returns of Cole and Miller provide a much-needed boost to their respective teams' pitching staffs. As both players make their comeback, the Yankees and Dodgers look to strengthen their rotations and continue their pursuit of success in the league.
