In a tragic incident captured on geolocated footage, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy named Rami Hamdan Al-Halhouli was fatally shot in the Shuafat Refugee Camp in East Jerusalem. The footage, analyzed by Bellingcat, shows Rami lighting a firework on the street and moving towards the Israeli Separation Barrier before a shot is heard, causing the boy to fall to the ground.
According to the Israeli police, a single shot was fired at a suspect who posed a threat by firing aerial fireworks towards the security forces. An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the Israeli Police, as reported by Haaretz. The police responded to the footage on Twitter, stating that the disturbances in Shuafat involved the throwing of explosives, Molotov cocktails, and direct shooting of aerial fireworks at the security forces. They further stated that operations were carried out to prevent harm to the security forces.
The footage reveals Rami wearing black pants and a black and striped hooded jumper, lighting the firework and moving towards the Separation Barrier. Three distinct bangs can be heard in the audio analysis of the footage, with the first two coinciding with Rami's fall, and the third coinciding with the firework exploding. Dr. Robert Maher, a Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, analyzed the audio and estimated that the firearm was approximately 66 meters away from the microphone. The analysis also suggests that the bullet was fired before the firework was launched.
Additional footage posted by Anadolu Agency shows the aftermath of the shooting, with Rami lying motionless on the ground. The location where Rami was shot was geolocated to be near a cream-colored building and a red car. The Separation Barrier and a reconnaissance tower behind it can be seen in the footage, further confirming the location. Rami was approximately 40 meters from the barrier and 70 meters from the tower when he fell.
The Israeli police have launched an investigation into the incident, while Israel's National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, expressed support for the police officer involved, commending their actions against a "terrorist" who attempted to shoot fireworks at the forces.
Rami's family has not yet received his body, but they have informed the BBC that he was struck in the heart by the bullet. As the investigation continues, this tragic incident has once again underscored the ongoing tensions and violence in the Shuafat Refugee Camp and the need for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
