In a last-minute scramble to pass a government funding bill, tensions arose within the Democratic party over funding for a Philadelphia LGBTQ community center and a pro-gun provision. While the legislation is still expected to pass, some intra-party disputes have emerged just days before the deadline to avert a partial government shutdown.

The turmoil began when Senators John Fetterman and Bob Casey, both Democrats from Pennsylvania, issued letters to top appropriators withdrawing their support for funding the LGBTQ community center. This prompted Senate leaders to swiftly remove the proposed funding from the bill.

Around the same time, a viral post from the conservative TikTok account "Libs Of TikTok" highlighted the fact that the community center rents its space to a third party that hosts adult gatherings involving "BDSM, kink, and fetish" activities. While the information did not come directly from the TikTok account, a different organization brought it to the attention of appropriators, who flagged it to the two Pennsylvania senators.

Senator Casey explained the change of heart, stating, "We received new information and decided not to support the appropriation." He believes the money has already been rescinded. However, Senator Fetterman surprised reporters by stating that his staff sent the letter without his knowledge, and despite the controversy, he continues to fully support funding for the community center.

In a subsequent statement, Fetterman emphasized the vital work carried out by the William Way LGBT Community Center in Philadelphia, expressing his belief that the center should not be penalized for legal activities among consenting adults. He vowed to continue fighting for the center's funding in future appropriations processes.

Senator Casey, who is facing re-election later this year, remains committed to his decision to revoke the funding. His spokesperson, Mairead Lynn, emphasized that although consenting adults have the right to engage in private activities, appropriations projects like this require careful scrutiny on behalf of taxpayers.

In another late twist, Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut announced his opposition to the funding bill due to a pro-gun provision for veterans. Murphy argued that the provision could enable approximately 20,000 seriously mentally ill individuals to purchase firearms annually, potentially resulting in higher suicide rates. He questioned why Democratic leaders had given in to this demand, stating that he cannot accept it as the new norm.

It remains unclear how many other Democrats will join Murphy in opposing the bill. However, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Mark Kelly expressed their concerns about the pro-gun provision but indicated that they would not be willing to derail the entire funding package and risk a government shutdown over it. In the House, Representatives Rosa DeLauro and Pete Aguilar, both Democrats, said they oppose the gun provision but would still support the overall bill.

While the funding bill is expected to pass, it has encountered resistance from House conservatives who feel that it falls short in terms of spending cuts and advancing Republican policy priorities, such as defunding federal prosecutors involved in indictments against former President Donald Trump.

Critics from the conservative House Freedom Caucus expressed their dissatisfaction with the legislation, specifically highlighting its failure to address their concerns. Representative Chip Roy of Texas lamented that the bill did not deliver on promises made to the American people.

As the deadline for government funding approaches, Congress faces the challenge of resolving these internal disputes and reaching a consensus that will keep the government running smoothly.
