In the city of Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands, the Frames Group, originally thriving in the oil and gas industry, has embarked on a remarkable journey towards embracing green hydrogen as a clean energy alternative. When the oil prices crashed in 2015 and global focus shifted to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Frames Group's top management, led by Jordi Zonneveld, made a bold decision to steer the company in a new direction. They saw an opportunity to contribute to the energy transition by shifting towards producing green hydrogen using clean electricity.
Hydrogen, a versatile energy carrier, offers a promising solution for decarbonizing various sectors. Zonneveld, leveraging his team's expertise in gas processing, recognized the potential of green hydrogen production and set out to make it a significant part of Frames Group's business. Despite facing skepticism from some colleagues, they persevered, and within five years, green hydrogen accounted for 10% of the company's operations.
Plug Power, a clean energy company based in New York, shared Frames Group's vision for a sustainable future powered by hydrogen. In 2021, Plug Power acquired Frames Group, marking a significant milestone in their journey towards becoming leaders in the production of green hydrogen. With a goal of producing over 1,000 tons of green hydrogen per day globally in this decade, Plug Power aims to revolutionize the clean energy sector.
The merger with Plug Power has opened new opportunities for Frames Group, allowing them to scale up their green hydrogen production and collaborate with major customers like Amazon. Plug Power's cutting-edge technology now powers forklifts in Amazon warehouses and supports the generation of clean hydrogen on-site in Colorado. With the support of the Biden administration's incentives and the Department of Energy financing, Plug Power is well-positioned to lead the way in clean hydrogen production. Frames Group, under Zonneveld's visionary leadership, continues to play a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable energy future.
