In a recent incident, a freight train derailed in the Chicago suburb of Matteson, causing temporary evacuations of nearby residences and establishments. Local news outlets report that the derailment occurred at 217th Street and Main.

During the incident, a suspected leak from the derailed cars prompted a mandatory evacuation within a specific radius of the site. According to NBC Chicago, the evacuation affected individuals and businesses located within a quarter-mile to the east, one mile to the west, and one mile to the south of the derailment site. However, the evacuation order was lifted later on Thursday afternoon, relieving residents and business owners in the vicinity.

Canadian National Railway issued a statement stating that the derailment involved approximately 25 cars that were carrying various substances. Fortunately, there were no reports of fires or injuries, ensuring the safety of those in the area. A spokesperson mentioned that only one car experienced a limited leak of residue liquified petroleum gas, which has since been contained.

In an emailed statement, the spokesperson provided reassurance, stating, "There is no danger to public safety." They confirmed that the precautionary evacuation had been lifted, except for properties directly adjacent to the site.

The cause of the train derailment is currently under investigation. Local authorities, including the Matteson police, will release additional information regarding the incident later on Thursday.

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with transportation operations. Efforts are continuously made to maintain the safety of such operations while ensuring the least disruption to neighboring communities.

As investigations continue, impacted residents and businesses have been assured that there is no imminent threat to their safety. However, it is crucial to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure a swift and secure resolution to the situation.
