France captain Kylian Mbappe endured a painful blow to his face during his team's triumph over Austria in the Euro 2024 tournament on Monday, resulting in a broken nose. This injury may potentially affect his ability to participate for the national team in the remaining matches of the competition. However, it is not anticipated to end Mbappe's involvement altogether.
The medical team of the French football squad swiftly confirmed the severity of Mbappe's broken nose, with reports indicating that surgery was initially expected at the University of Dusseldorf facilities. However, the decision was made to forego immediate surgical intervention for the World Cup winner.
"Kylian Mbappe has suffered a broken nose," stated the French Football Federation in an overnight release. "He is back in camp with the rest of the squad and will undergo treatment in the coming days without undergoing immediate surgery."
The Federation further added that a mask would be constructed to assist Mbappe in considering a return to competitive play after a period of treatment. In a positive twist, the French team's No. 10 took to social media to ask for suggestions on mask designs.
The incident leading to Mbappe's injury occurred in the 86th minute during a clash with Austria defender Kevin Danso. Following the collision, blood stained Mbappe's face and jersey, prompting immediate attention from the medical staff. Although Mbappe attempted to rejoin the match, he collapsed on the ground shortly after and was subsequently substituted by veteran forward Olivier Giroud in the 90th minute.
France manager Didier Deschamps provided a brief assessment of Mbappe's injury in his post-match remarks, acknowledging the significance of the incident. "Kylian's nose is not fine at all," Deschamps expressed to TF1 moments after the final whistle. "We will see, but obviously it is the biggest negative to take from this evening."
Despite the setback, Mbappe played a crucial role in France's victory by forcing an own goal scored by Maximilian Wober in the 38th minute, ensuring a strong start to the Euros for Les Bleus. The young forward is still expected to be a key contributor as France aims to secure their first European Championship title since 2000.
However, there is a potential obstacle to Mbappe's availability. In his attempt to re-enter the pitch, he disregarded the referee's permission and received a yellow card, which could result in a suspension if he accumulates another yellow card. This rule applies to all players at the Euros, with suspensions only being wiped after the quarterfinals.
France's upcoming match in Euro 2024 takes place on Friday against the Netherlands in Leipzig. The stakes will be high, as the outcome will determine the leaders of Group D. As Mbappe undergoes treatment for his broken nose, the French team will be eager to secure victory and maintain their strong position in the tournament.
