The Detroit Lions are gearing up for the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, and with their intentions shrouded in secrecy, the possibilities seem endless. As a sports writer, it's my duty to make predictions, although I must admit that my track record isn't perfect. Nonetheless, I will offer sensible reasoning behind my four predictions for the Lions' draft picks.

Prediction 1: The Lions will trade down in the first round. With the 29th pick and limited draft capital, it makes sense to maximize the value by adding more picks. Lions general manager Brad Holmes hinted at the possibility of trading out of the first round, suggesting they may not find a top-tier talent at this spot. While trading up is also an option, Holmes didn't sound particularly enthusiastic about it.

Prediction 2: The Lions will draft a guard who won't start in 2024 but will in 2025. Detroit has long-term needs at guard, and depending on Frank Ragnow's future due to health concerns, there might be a third need on the offensive line. Colby Sorsdal came close to fulfilling this prediction last year, but this time, I won't be surprised if the Lions select an interior offensive lineman early on.

Prediction 3: The Lions won't draft a defensive end on Day 1 or 2. Despite the perceived need for an edge defender, the Lions have a rotation of experienced players in that position, including Aidan Hutchinson, Josh Paschal, Marcus Davenport, John Cominsky, James Houston, and Mathieu Betts. The draft class doesn't offer clear upgrades, and if the Lions seek one, they might need to trade up.

Prediction 4: The Lions will draft a Day 3 linebacker who becomes a core special teamer. The conversation between linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard and Jalen Reeves-Maybin hints at the team's late plans. With depth concerns beyond their top five linebackers, the Lions may look to add competition and a developmental player on Day 3. Potential names to keep an eye on are Jordan Magee from Temple, Edefuan Ulofoshio from Washington, Ty'Ron Hopper from Missouri, and JD Bertrand from Notre Dame.

As the 2024 NFL season approaches, the Lions face important decisions in the upcoming draft. These predictions offer insight into potential paths the team might take, but as with any draft, surprises are bound to occur. Only time will tell if these predictions prove accurate or if the Lions chart a different course to build their roster.

The Detroit Lions will be closely watched as the NFL Draft unfolds this weekend, and fans can't help but speculate about the team's strategy. With anticipation building, football enthusiasts can only wait and see how these predictions unfold on the draft night.
