In a shocking turn of events, former Vice President Mike Pence announced on Friday that he could not endorse Donald Trump as the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2024 presidential campaign. Pence, who served as Trump's Vice President during their term in office, appeared on Fox News to express his concerns.
Pence stated that Trump's current agenda does not align with the conservative values on which they governed during their four years in office. He pointed to key policy differences, including Trump's stance on abortion and the national debt, as well as his recent reversal on the issue of TikTok.
The former Vice President, who abstained from endorsing any candidate during the 2024 Republican primary, had previously pledged to support the eventual nominee. However, he explained that he could not in good conscience back Trump, given their diverging positions on important issues.
"During my presidential campaign, I made it clear that there were profound differences between me and President Trump on a range of issues," Pence stated. "As I have observed his candidacy unfold, I have witnessed him deviate from our commitment to addressing the national debt, distancing himself from the sanctity of human life, and reversing his stance on China and TikTok."
Pence did not disclose his preference for the 2024 general election, stating that he would keep his vote to himself. However, he categorically ruled out supporting President Joe Biden and dismissed the possibility of backing a third-party candidate.
This announcement marks a significant break from Pence's loyalty to his former running mate. The Vice President had previously faced criticism for refusing to overturn the results of the 2020 election, even as he presided over the certification of Joe Biden's victory in Congress.
Pence cited Trump's "reckless words" during the events of January 6, 2021, when the US Capitol was stormed by a mob of Trump supporters. He described the incident as endangering the lives of his family and others present at the Capitol.
In his own presidential campaign, Pence had warned Republicans about the dangers of succumbing to the "siren song of populism" promoted by Trump and his followers. Recently, Pence and his organization, Advancing American Freedom, announced a substantial allocation of $20 million towards the advancement of conservative policies.
It remains to be seen how Pence's decision will impact the political landscape ahead of the 2024 election. His refusal to endorse Trump signals a significant divide within the Republican Party, highlighting the tensions between establishment conservatives and the populist movement that Trump represents.
