A former University of Nebraska basketball player, Ashley Scoggin, has filed a federal lawsuit against the school, its board of regents, coach Amy Williams, athletic director Trev Alberts, and former assistant coach Chuck Love Jr. Scoggin alleges that the athletic department officials should have taken more action to protect her from being groomed by Love.
According to the lawsuit, Love pursued Scoggin in the summer of 2021, leading to a sexual relationship that involved encounters in University of Nebraska Department of Athletics facilities and hotel rooms during team travels. Scoggin's fear of approaching Coach Williams due to potential unpredictable reactions worsened the situation as Love allegedly manipulated her into maintaining secrecy.
Scoggin's teammates suspected the improper relationship and confronted her in Love's hotel room during a trip to Penn State in February 2022 after a Nebraska practice player managed to obtain access to the assistant coach's room. Despite Love's instructions to deny any allegations, the lawsuit states that Williams and players accused Scoggin of lying, with the head coach allegedly failing to address the abusive power dynamics.
Love resigned from his position in May 2022, citing a decision to "move on and be with family." Scoggin has since transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she is currently playing for the Lady Rebels with a 22-2 record.
The University of Nebraska was made aware of the lawsuit in February, with spokesperson Melissa Lee delivering a statement on behalf of the school, Williams, and Albert. The lawsuit brings to light allegations of misconduct within the University's athletic department, prompting a legal battle surrounding the handling of relationships between coaching staff and student-athletes.
