A former Husker women's basketball player, Ashley Scoggin, has filed a 28-page lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Lincoln, Nebraska. Scoggin played as a guard for the team from 2021 to 2022 and is taking legal action against the University of Nebraska, Athletics Director Trev Alberts, head coach Amy Williams, and former coach Chuck Love Jr.
The lawsuit alleges that Chuck Love Jr., the former associate head coach, engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with Scoggin, resulting in her expulsion from the team. Love was put on paid suspension and later resigned following the allegations.
According to the lawsuit, Love initiated the relationship by inviting Scoggin for drinks and later progressed to intimate encounters. Scoggin's attorney claims that Love demanded sex when and where he wanted it, often on school property or during away games. When Scoggin refused, she allegedly faced repercussions such as reduced playtime.
Teammates eventually discovered the relationship and reported it to head coach Amy Williams. The lawsuit accuses Williams of not protecting Scoggin's confidentiality and allowing the team to interrogate both Scoggin and Love, portraying Scoggin as a "seducer and a liar."
Williams subsequently suspended Scoggin from the team on February 19, 2022, and suspended Love with pay before he resigned in May. Scoggin claims she suffered emotionally and professionally due to the media coverage, losing housing and facing challenges in accessing education and physical therapy.
The lawsuit also alleges that the University of Nebraska and Athletics Director Trev Alberts failed to properly investigate the situation and violated Title IX regulations. Scoggin contends that she was subjected to sexual harassment by a university employee and was penalized for coming forward with her allegations.
