In a tragic turn of events, Stephanie Sparks, a former All-American college golfer and co-host on several Golf Channel programs, including the reality show "Big Break," has passed away at the age of 50. Sparks, whose cause of death remains unknown, was living in Orlando at the time of her passing.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Sparks had a remarkable amateur golf career. She achieved notable victories in prestigious tournaments such as the 1992 North and South Women's Amateur and the 1993 Women's Western Amateur and Women's Eastern Amateur. Additionally, Sparks represented Duke University in college golf, earning first-team All-American honors during her freshman year and second-team honors during her sophomore year.
Her skills and dedication to the sport led her to compete on the 1994 American Curtis Cup team, where she played a crucial role in the team's tie against Great Britain & Ireland at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Unfortunately, injuries hampered the latter part of her college career and persisted as she transitioned into the professional circuit.
Sparks briefly participated in the LPGA Tour, spending one season before deciding to end her playing career. Despite this, golf remained an integral part of her life. In 2004, she took on the role of Alexa Stirling in the movie "Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius," showcasing her versatile talents. She also became a familiar face to golf enthusiasts as a co-host of Golf Channel's popular reality show "Big Break."
During her seven-year tenure on "Big Break," Sparks supported contestants as they vied for the opportunity to play in professional events. Having experienced the challenges and emotions of professional golf herself, she empathized with their journey and genuinely wanted them to succeed. Additionally, Sparks made appearances on other Golf Channel series such as "Golf With Style" and "Playing Lessons with the Pros," further solidifying her presence in the golfing community.
Fellow co-host Tom Abbott, who worked alongside Sparks for seven years on "Big Break," expressed his admiration for her understanding of the contestants' experiences. He spoke of how Sparks would ride their emotional rollercoaster, drawing upon her own professional golf background to provide guidance and encouragement.
The golfing world mourns the loss of Stephanie Sparks, a talented golfer, beloved co-host, and passionate advocate for the sport. Her contributions to the game and her impact on aspiring golfers will be remembered and cherished. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
