In an effort to bolster their defensive lineup, the Dallas Cowboys recently held tryouts for several players, including two former first-round picks. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, cornerbacks Gareon Conley and Deandre Baker were among the players who tried out for the team on Tuesday.
Gareon Conley, who played for the D.C. Defenders in the UFL this year, was a first-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2017. After spending two seasons with the Raiders, he was traded to the Houston Texans during the 2019 season. Unfortunately, Conley's 2020 season was plagued by injury as he landed on the injured reserve in September and missed the entire year. As a result, he has not participated in an NFL game for the past four seasons.
Deandre Baker, who was Conley's teammate on the D.C. Defenders this year, also joined the tryouts. Baker, originally drafted in the first round by the New York Giants in 2019, made his NFL debut with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 and 2021. However, his time with the Giants was marred by legal issues, as he was charged with armed robbery in 2020. Fortunately, the charges against Baker were eventually dropped.
Apart from Conley and Baker, the Cowboys also had linebacker Willie Harvey Jr. and Noah Dawkins in their tryouts. With a focus on strengthening their defense, these tryouts highlight the team's commitment to exploring all available options to improve their roster.
The Cowboys' coaching staff will carefully evaluate the performance of Conley, Baker, Harvey Jr., and Dawkins in the tryouts before making any decisions regarding potential signings. While their respective journeys have had their fair share of ups and downs, all four players have the potential to make a significant impact on the Cowboys' defense should they secure a spot on the roster.
Cowboys fans eagerly await further updates regarding these tryouts and hope that the team will be able to add some talented players to their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
