Former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov, accused of providing false information about Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden during the 2020 election campaign, is set to appear in a California federal court for a hearing on Monday. The 43-year-old was re-arrested in Las Vegas after federal prosecutors expressed concerns about him potentially leaving the United States following his international flight arrival. Smirnov, who had been a confidential source for the FBI since 2010, allegedly received information from Russian intelligence officials and is accused of spreading falsehoods about the Bidens, including claims related to payments from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. House Republicans had previously emphasized Smirnov's unverified allegations during the impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden but have now backed away from their significance. Smirnov's lawyers, David Z. Chesnoff and Richard A. Schonfeld, are advocating for his release, with the case being closely monitored as the hearing unfolds in California.
