In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, former employee Trevor Phillips has accused rapper Kanye West, his Yeezy company, and the Los Angeles-based K-12 Christian private school, Donda Academy, of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. The suit, obtained by CNN, claims that West treated black staff members significantly worse than their white counterparts, describing the discrimination as "severe."
According to the lawsuit, West would allegedly scream and berate black employees, while treating white staff members with far more respect. Phillips, who is black, claims that he was often the target of disparate and harassing behavior, as well as disdain from West. The former employee further alleges that he witnessed West making antisemitic remarks, expressing hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community, and engaging in inappropriate behavior.
The lawsuit also references West's controversial actions in October 2022. During a YZY runway show at Paris fashion week, West wore a "White Lives Matter" t-shirt and dressed black models in clothing bearing the same slogan, which has been associated with the Ku Klux Klan. Additionally, West made antisemitic comments in a podcast episode, causing financial repercussions for him and his brand partners. The suit claims that West proudly championed his deep-rooted antisemitism and spread discriminatory conspiracies during meetings at Donda Academy.
Phillips alleges that he faced relentless harassment and attempts by West to control and destroy him after he pushed back against West's bigotry and instructions to violate the law. The suit also mentions a vulgar incident in which West publicly lashed out at Phillips in front of schoolchildren and their parents, even threatening him with physical violence.
Phillips was initially hired to work for West's Yeezy fashion brand in November 2022, but his role expanded to include responsibilities at Donda Academy. Although the school reportedly shut down in 2023, the lawsuit suggests it might still be operational. CNN has reached out to the Donda Academy for comment, but a listed phone number appears to be out of service.
In an uncomfortable three-hour meeting, Phillips claims that West praised Hitler and made derogatory remarks about gay people, stating that "gay people are not true Christians." Phillips' employment with Donda Academy ended in August 2023. The former employee is seeking a jury trial and a minimum of $35,000 in damages.
In December 2023, West issued an apology to the Jewish community for any unintended outbursts caused by his words or actions. CNN's Alli Rosenbloom and Elizabeth Wagmeister contributed to this report.
