**Turmoil at Florida State: Coach Mike Norvell Fires Key Staff Amid Disastrous Season**
In a determined bid to salvage a troubling season, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has made sweeping changes to his coaching staff. On Sunday, Norvell announced the dismissal of offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, and receivers coach Ron Dugans. This decisive action followed the Seminoles’ staggering sixth consecutive defeat, a 52-3 rout by Notre Dame, marking their third loss in a row by a margin of over 20 points.
The Seminoles currently hold a dismal 1-9 record, positioning them for potentially their worst season since 1974, when they finished 1-10. At that time, the legendary Bobby Bowden had not yet taken the helm to build the storied program.
In a statement, Norvell expressed his gratitude for the contributions of the departing coaches over the past several years. "I appreciate the work these three men have provided over the last five years with me at Florida State," he said. He emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to aspire to the standards expected at Florida State.
In the interim, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Randy Shannon will manage defensive playcalling duties. Norvell also mentioned that other staff members would step up to fill in the gaps left by the departing coaches.
The challenges facing the team are stark. The Seminoles rank last among 134 FBS teams in scoring, averaging just 13.3 points per game, while their defense ranks 101st, allowing 29.8 points per game. This slump is all the more surprising considering the team’s undefeated 13-0 run and ACC title just in 2023. Despite a major setback with starting quarterback Jordan Travis's injury and subsequent exclusion from the College Football Playoff, the team faced a significant defeat, losing 63-3 to Georgia in the Capital One Orange Bowl.
Norvell, who had been linked to the head coach vacancy at Alabama following Nick Saban's retirement, secured his commitment to Florida State with a 10-year contract extension worth over $84 million extending through 2031. The Seminoles will look to end their turbulent season with upcoming games against Charleston Southern on November 23 and their rivals, Florida, the following week.
