TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida Senators have approved a new bill that targets individuals who linger in the left lane on Florida highways. The legislation, known as HB 317, designates the left lane as a "passing lane only" in areas with a posted speed limit of at least 65 mph. Drivers found driving below the speed limit or obstructing traffic flow in the left lane could face a fine of up to $158.
The Department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles currently prohibits passing vehicles in the right lane on Florida highways. The bill, which was previously passed by the Florida House on Feb. 15, is now awaiting a decision from Governor DeSantis. During a recent event in Pensacola, the governor remained noncommittal when questioned about signing the bill into law.
If signed by Governor DeSantis, the new legislation will come into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. The move aims to promote smoother traffic flow and safer driving practices on Florida's highways.
