The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a Flood Warning for the Wabash River from Lafayette to Montezuma in Indiana. This warning comes as rainfall amounts of around two inches are expected across central Indiana through Tuesday evening, leading to minor flooding along the upper to middle parts of the Wabash basin.

According to the forecast, river flooding could begin as early as Tuesday afternoon at Lafayette and progressively affect downstream locations thereafter. There is also a possibility of more significant localized flooding if there are higher amounts of rainfall in certain areas. As a result, individuals with interests along the river are advised to closely monitor the forecast as additional flood warnings may be issued further downstream on the Wabash River and other nearby rivers in the next couple of days.

The impacted area specifically mentioned in the warning is the Wabash River at Lafayette. The forecast predicts that minor flooding is expected in this region from Tuesday afternoon through late Saturday morning. At a stage of 16.0 feet, low-lying areas near SR 225 between Old SR 25 and Battleground, Warren CR 350 N near Black Rock Preserve, and Tippecanoe CR 950 W in the Wabash Bottoms, Janssen Tract area may become impassable. Additionally, flooding at the Fort Ouiatenon grounds is also expected.

As of Monday afternoon, the Wabash River's stage was recorded at 4.0 feet. However, the forecast predicts that the river will rise above the flood stage early tomorrow afternoon, reaching a crest of 15.7 feet on Wednesday evening, before falling below flood stage by late Friday. The flood stage for the Wabash River is set at 11.0 feet.

In addition to the Flood Warning, there is also a Flash Flood Warning for all of Central Indiana as a result of excessive rainfall. This warning is valid from this evening at 8 PM EDT until Tuesday afternoon. The repeated rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms overnight may cause flash flooding. It is expected that around 2 inches of rain will fall through Tuesday, with the possibility of locally higher amounts, especially if there are training thunderstorms.

The impacts of this potential flash flooding include excessive runoff, which may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Individuals in Central Indiana are urged to closely monitor the forecasts and be prepared to take action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued.

Motorists are reminded not to attempt to drive around barricades or through flooded areas to ensure their safety.
