Many college-bound students this year are facing uncertainty as they await financial aid decisions following delays in the release of the revised Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Education Department's new FAFSA form, intended to be simpler and more accurate, has been plagued with difficulties, impacting over 17 million students who rely on it annually. Schools are adjusting their timelines, with Virginia Tech extending its admissions deposit deadline to May 15 to allow families more time to make informed decisions. Parents and students, like Jenny Nicholas and Agata James, are hesitant to commit to a college without knowing the financial implications. Despite efforts by the Education Department to address the delays and issues with the new FAFSA form, including reducing verification requirements and providing technical assistance, many students, such as Jesus Noyola and Lorenzo Jaramillo, are facing obstacles in the application process. The delays are a source of concern for schools like the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as they may impact both students and institutions as they navigate the evolving financial aid landscape.
