In an exclusive interview with PCGamesN, Naoki Yoshida, the game director and producer of Final Fantasy 14, shared insights about the highly anticipated Dawntrail expansion. Yoshida discussed the cancellation of certain new jobs, the design process for unique classes, and the challenges faced by the development team.
The Dawntrail expansion is set to introduce two distinctive jobs to Final Fantasy 14 - the Viper and the Pictomancer. The Viper offers a fast-paced and intricate blend of combo chains, while the Pictomancer unleashes powerful, colorful devastation through art-inspired transformations. These new classes bring fresh control layouts to the MMORPG, providing players with more gameplay options using a reduced number of button presses.
With a total of 21 classes in Final Fantasy 14 (excluding the limited Blue Mage job and its upcoming Dawntrail counterpart, the Beastmaster), Yoshida shed light on the difficulty of finding space for new jobs. While the team acknowledges the uniqueness of jobs from previous Final Fantasy titles, they prioritize introducing classes with different mechanics to create a fresh and engaging multiplayer experience.
Yoshida mentioned that some iconic jobs, such as the Time Mage, do not easily translate to the MMORPG format. The ability to manipulate time would potentially overpower the job or alter its core concept. As a result, Final Fantasy 14 will focus on creating more original jobs that fit seamlessly into the game's mechanics and retain the legacy of the franchise.
The development process starts with the design of the job's weapon, which is crucial in setting it apart from other classes. Yoshida highlighted the challenges of incorporating certain weapons, such as the whip, due to the complexity of their implementation and the need to create unique designs for all the various in-game content. For example, the bow has faced similar issues and often requires additional elements to enhance its visual appeal.
One notable addition in the Dawntrail expansion is the Sage, a healer job that wields four drone-like 'Nouliths' for precise healing and damage with laser blasts. Yoshida acknowledged the team's struggle to create unique designs for every new job and recalled an amusing idea of holding a large orb as the Sage's weapon, ultimately deciding against it.
The release date for Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail is just around the corner, and players are eagerly awaiting the new jobs and exciting gameplay experiences. However, it's important to note that the content mentioned in this article is based on a preview build, and the final version is subject to change.
As fans continue to delve into the vibrant world of Final Fantasy 14, the dedication of the development team in creating new and innovative jobs is sure to keep the game fresh and captivating for players to explore.
