In a surprising turn of events at Imola, Ferrari showcased their dominance during the opening practice for the upcoming race on home soil. With their heavily upgraded car, Ferrari secured a one-three finish, leaving their rivals trailing behind. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen of Red Bull faced a series of setbacks, experiencing a frustrating practice session.
Much anticipation surrounded Ferrari's updates ahead of the race, and they did not disappoint. Opting for a full package upgrade, including changes to the front wing, rear wing, sidepod inlet, engine cover, floor edge, diffuser, and rear suspension, the Italian team demonstrated their commitment to improving their performance.
It was Charles Leclerc who took the lead, setting an impressive lap time of 1:16.990s, the only driver to break below the 77-second mark. He finished just ahead of Mercedes' George Russell by a tenth of a second, with Carlos Sainz close behind, trailing the Briton by a mere 26-hundredths of a second.
However, the practice session was far from successful for Max Verstappen. Despite initially showing promise, setting the fastest first sector, Verstappen soon encountered problems. He complained of bottoming through Turn 11 while on soft-tyre runs. In subsequent attempts, he found himself cutting the grass at Variante Alta and running into the gravel at Turn 11. These issues have left the Red Bull team with work to be done to rectify the car's apparent troubles.
Ultimately, Verstappen finished with the fifth-fastest time, a quarter of a second behind Leclerc. Even his teammate, Sergio Perez, managed to outpace the Dutch driver by a mere 0.007s. The Red Bull team will need to regroup and find solutions to ensure a stronger performance in the upcoming sessions.
Interestingly, the teams opted for different tire compounds from the outset. Red Bull chose the softer option, Mercedes went for the mediums, while Ferrari surprised everyone by starting with hard tires. This resulted in Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen temporarily setting the leading times before they were overtaken by Yuki Tsunoda and George Russell, respectively.
The session saw multiple changes at the top of the timesheet, reflecting the competitive nature of the practice. However, it was Leclerc who ultimately sealed the fastest lap time, comfortably ahead of Russell. Notably, both drivers managed to dip below the 77-second mark.
As the practice session came to a close, Verstappen's struggles continued. An issue with a tear-off visor lodged in a brake duct forced him to pit early on, disrupting his momentum. Despite displaying moments of brilliance in sector one, Turn 11 proved to be his kryptonite, hampering his performance and leaving him off the pace.
The upcoming sessions will be crucial for Verstappen and the Red Bull team as they work to resolve the car's issues and regain their competitive edge. Meanwhile, Ferrari's strong showing in practice has undoubtedly put them in a favorable position heading into the race weekend on their home turf.
